Manhattan Beach

Manhattan Beach is one of the three Beach Cities of South Bay, along with Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach.

Home to more than 35,000 residents, Manhattan Beach is located 19 miles southwest of Los Angeles. Its exceptional Pacific Coast location, coupled with its proximity to the urban and commercial centers of the Greater LA region has made this city one of the premier spots for luxury residences on the West Coast.

History

The territory covered today by the city of Manhattan Beach was formerly a part of the 10-mile Rancho Sausal Redondo land grant.

One of the land’s earliest owners, George Peck, named the northern section of the area, “Shore Acres.” In 1901, the southern portion of the Rancho was purchased by New Yorker John Merrill, who renamed the area after his home borough, Manhattan. A coin flip decided that the latter would be the city’s name. Upon the insistence of the postmaster, the word “Beach” was added to prevent confusion with the other Manhattan in New York City.

Formerly comprising vast expanses of sand dunes, the city began to take shape after the first downtown building and two wooden piers were built in 1901. Manhattan Beach officially became a city in 1912.

Following the events of World War II, Manhattan Beach welcomed the influx of people looking for homes. The defense industry was one of the primary catalysts for the growth of this city’s population.
