Carson

The City of Carson lies 16 miles south of Downtown Los Angeles in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. It’s one of the region’s harbor communities, located just around 13 miles from the Port of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Airport is also only 12 miles away.

Three of LA’s major freeways – the Harbor, San Diego, and Artesia – pass through Carson. The Long Beach and Century freeways are in close proximity, providing residents with great access to everything Southern California has to offer.

Carson has a highly diverse population of around 89,500. In 2015, the city was named an All American City, a distinction given by the National Civic League to municipalities who have successfully engaged their residents in overcoming
challenges in their communities.

History

In the 1800s, Carson was part of Rancho San Pedro, an expansive land grant given to Spanish soldier, Juan Jose Dominguez. Parts of the land were sold to various buyers in the latter part of the century, leading to the creation of smaller communities in the area.

By the 1950s, the population in South Bay had grown tremendously. New residential developments, including the community of Carson, grew from what used to be agricultural lands.

Carson incorporated as a city of Los Angeles in 1968, and had since seen even more growth, both in its population and economy.

Enrichment activities for teens include training in theater, ballet, math, design, and others.

There are arts and crafts programs for kids and adults, as well as free yoga classes and family coaching sessions. Sports leagues for adults and fitness classes at the Veterans Sports Complex encourage everyone to have a healthy and active lifestyle.

Carson’s central location puts residents just minutes away from Los Angeles’s best attractions, such as the Los Angeles Zoo, Disneyland Park, Knott’s Berry Farm, and more. The famous beaches of Southern California, including Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, and El Segundo Beach are no more than 30 minutes away.

Carson is served by the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Compton Unified School District, both of which include top-rated elementary and high schools. The California State University, Dominguez Hills is found in the city, offering opportunities for higher education to residents of Carson and other South Bay municipalities.
