El Segundo

El Segundo is a waterfront city facing the Santa Monica Bay and the rest of the Pacific Ocean.

Located 20 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles and offering easy access to the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), it is a highly desired suburb for Southern California professionals looking for convenient residential neighborhoods that easily connect to the rest of LA and the world.

Living in El Segundo, CA

El Segundo holds its own as a thriving Greater Los Angeles city, thanks to the petroleum- and aviation-related industries anchoring a strong economy. A number of globally and nationally relevant companies are also headquartered here, including some of the biggest names in the entertainment, information technology, electronics, and retail industries.

Because El Segundo is home to high-profile residents and top corporations, the city is awash in urban conveniences, complemented by area’s gorgeous Pacific Coast location.

El Segundo families send their children to the El Segundo Unified School District, which includes a preschool, two primary schools, zoned middle and high schools, a pair of alternative learning schools for secondary level students, and an adult learning school.

Favorites among El Segundo’s many local attractions include:

  • Downtown El Segundo
Where the vintage sleepy town vibe of the city’s early days meets an eclectic selection of shops and recreational centers. You will also find iconic restaurants here, such as the romantic Deluca Trattoria, the health-friendly Farm Stand, and the retro-styled Purple Orchid bar.
  • El Segundo Museum of Art (ESMoA)
More than just a gallery or exhibition space, ESMoA is an art laboratory that aims to cultivate local talent and creativity.
  • Old Town Music Hall
A local gem that houses a 1925 pipe organ and is the go-to destination for vintage films and live jazz and ragtime concerts.

Real Estate and Property Types

El Segundo real estate options vary greatly, offering a wide array of houses for all types of buyers.

Those looking for detached, single-family homes will enjoy browsing through a selection of Colonial Revival, Tudor, Mediterranean, and traditional Ranch houses with 3 to 4 bedrooms on average. If condos are what you prefer, there are plenty of those as well.

History

Before growing into a thriving city of 17,000, El Segundo was once uninhabited land used primarily for dryland farming (the cultivation of drought-resistant and moisture conserving crops). The area was part of the Rancho Sausal Redondo, the expansive land area from which neighboring territories like Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, and Hermosa Beach also originated. The city was incorporated in 1917.

The petroleum and aviation industries encouraged the growth of El Segundo throughout the 20th century. LAX first opened as the Los Angeles Municipal Airport in 1930, a development that would usher in the arrival of several aviation and aerospace companies, many of which operate to this day.
